Why Does Clawhammer No Longer Ship To North Carolina?

Owner of Clawhammer Supply

Federal and state rules and regulations on distilling can be very difficult to navigate. Clawhammer has been selling stills since early 2012 and we've been carefully navigating the waters of distillation regulation from the very beginning.

We originally wanted to headquarter the business in North Carolina. However, the North Carolina ABC informed us (as a response to our inquiry) that operating a business in NC that produces and sells distillation equipment (even if it's just a kit) isn't possible, according to the state's laws. Clawhammer can ship still kits to NC from another state, and residents of North Carolina are allowed to purchase distillation equipment (assuming they're using them for legal purposes, they have the proper permits, etc.), but stills cannot be made here.

We're currently headquartered in Johnson City, Tn. We manufacture all of our equipment and manage all of our operations from there. We also used to sell distillation equipment in North Carolina. However, we opened a sister company in NC in 2015, making it impossible to sell equipment in the state, for the aforementioned reasons.

With that said, if you live in NC and want to buy products, you're out of luck for the time being. If you are looking for a copper still and you don't live in North Carolina, it's your lucky day. We're fully stocked with 1, 5, and 10 gallon copper still kits and we ship daily.

Kyle Brown is the owner of Clawhammer Supply, a small scale distillation and brewing equipment company which he founded in 2009. His passion is teaching people about the many uses of distillation equipment as well as how to make beer at home. When he isn't brewing beer or writing about it, you can find him at his local gym or on the running trail.

  • Hello Kyle,
Am filling out federal/state application and had a few questions. There is a chart area that asks for
    1. Serial Number and Type of still and don’t know what to put there. If I get the 5 gallon kit what is the 24hour production on that for the chart?
    2. Aslo in the instructions it talks about “statments” Do I need to include these in application

    Thanks for your help

  • Love the shows, watch it all day. My dad was a bootlegger in the 1920s and 1930s, and I grew up in the South. What I do know is that the more the feds seek to socialize us and destroy the economy, the more we do for ourselves. Who will survive the coming depression will be those like us who have always been independent cusses and know how to survive. Thank God for Moonshiners. They are true Americans.
