Fresh ingredients delivered and ready to brew at home. This Best Bitter recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's 60 Minute Best Bitter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The name is the method: this bitter is brewed with a single hop addition at 60 minutes, a stripped-back brew day that shows how little a good English session ale actually needs. Despite the word bitter, it is not aggressive. The term sets it apart from mild rather than promising a hop bomb.

It pours amber to copper, a shade darker than most at 16 SRM, with a biscuity, lightly caramel malt base and earthy Fuggle and East Kent Goldings for balance. At 3.8% it is a true session beer, low enough to enjoy by the pint through a long afternoon and dry enough to keep you reaching for the next.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess). We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Nottingham (English/Neutral) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Scottish Ale (Wyeast Labs 1728).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Best Bitter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
