Make craft beer at home that tastes like the real thing. This American Barleywine recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Barleywine, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Barleywine is the strongest of the American ale family, a beer that borrows its name from English tradition and then doubles down on hops. English barleywines lean malty and sweet; the American take answers with aggressive bittering and citrus-pine aroma layered over caramel and dried fruit. At ten percent it drinks like a sipper, and it rewards a year or two of cellaring, where the hops fade and the malt turns toward sherry and dark fruit.

Columbus, Cascade, and Northern Brewer supply a bitterness firm enough to balance the heavy grist.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Barleywine. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
