Brew a great beer at home, even if it is your very first. This American Brown Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Brown Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Brown Ale took the malty English brown and gave it a hoppier, more assertive American accent. Homebrewers championed the style in the 1980s, Texas brewers especially, pushing the bitterness and hop aroma well past what an English brown would allow while keeping the nutty, chocolatey malt at its center.

It pours deep brown with cocoa, toasted bread, and caramel, and Special B adds a dark-fruit note underneath. Cascade and Willamette bring a citrus and spicy-earthy hop character that lifts the malt without burying it. At 5.6% it is an easygoing cool-weather beer that bridges the gap between pale ale and porter.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Amber Malt - MAKE MY OWN; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich I (Weyermann). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Ale (Wyeast Labs 1056).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Brown Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
