Brewing your own beer at home is simpler than you think. This American IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew

Brewing your own beer at home is simpler than you think. This American IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American IPA is the beer that changed what hops could do in a glass. It grew out of the West Coast in the 1980s and 1990s, when brewers pushed pale ale toward harder bittering and heavy late hop additions, leaning on American varieties loaded with citrus and pine resin. Expect a firm bitterness, a light malt backbone that stays out of the way, and an aroma that reaches you before the first sip.

This version runs Columbus, Simcoe, and a New Zealand hop called Nectaron that adds stone fruit and a tropical edge. Guest brewer Jason Temple helped put it together for the Homebrew Challenge.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Simcoe in place of the recipe's Denali (Exp 06277); Nectaron in place of the recipe's Kohatu. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Voss Kveik (Norwegian/Kveik) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Hornindal Kveik (Omega OYL-091).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
