Make your own beer at home and you may never buy a six-pack again. This American Amber Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient

Make your own beer at home and you may never buy a six-pack again. This American Amber Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Lager is the full-strength cousin of the light lager, the standard pale beer that defined American drinking through the twentieth century. Built by German-trained brewers working with local grain, it uses a portion of corn to keep the body light and the flavor smooth while pale malt supplies just enough backbone.

Expect a bright straw-gold pour, a clean grainy-sweet malt note, and a soft, rounded finish with only a light hop balance. A little Vienna malt adds a hint of extra depth over the lightest examples. It is a refreshing, sessionable lager that lives or dies on clean fermentation and a good cold conditioning.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's California Ale (White Labs WLP001).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Amber Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
