Quality homebrew ingredients, portioned for an easy brew day. This American Amber Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Light Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Light Lager is the best-selling beer style in the country, engineered for maximum drinkability and minimal assertiveness. Its lineage runs back to German immigrant brewers who adapted their pale lagers to American six-row barley by cutting the grist with corn or rice, which lightened the body and softened the flavor.

This is a pale straw beer with a whisper of malt, a barely-there hop presence, and a crisp finish that disappears fast. A single low-alpha noble hop keeps the bitterness low. Brewed well, it is harder to make than it looks: with nowhere to hide, fermentation has to be clean and the beer has to be cold.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Flaked Corn in place of the recipe's Flaked Rice. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Diamond (Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Lager Yeast (White Labs WLP840).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Amber Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
