Brew shop-quality beer at home, no brew shop required. This American Pale Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Pale Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Pale Ale is the beer that taught a generation what American hops taste like. When craft brewers took the English pale ale template and dropped in homegrown varieties, the result came out brighter and more citrusy, with a pine and grapefruit snap the English versions never had. Sierra Nevada's take became the benchmark.

It pours light amber over a clean malt backbone that stays out of the hops' way. Warrior sets the bitterness, then Amarillo and Cascade layer on melon and orange with a floral edge in the late boil. At 5% and around 40 IBU, it hits the balance point the style is built on.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Pale Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
