Making beer at home has never been easier. This American Porter recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Porter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Porter descends from the dark English beer that fueled London's working class in the eighteenth century, rebuilt with American malt and hops. It sits a step below stout in roast intensity, taking its color and flavor from chocolate and black malts rather than the sharp roasted barley of an Irish stout, which leaves it smoother and more chocolatey.

The pour is deep brown to black under a tan head. Expect cocoa, coffee, and a caramel sweetness, and here a late charge of Cascade pushes the hop presence higher than an English porter would allow. At 5.6% it stays drinkable, a dark beer with enough hop backbone to feel distinctly American.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carapils®. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs 1028).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Porter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
