This might be the easiest way to make beer you will find. This American Stout recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Stout, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American Stout is what happens when brewers apply the country's love of hops to a dark, roasty beer. It keeps the burnt-grain backbone of an Irish stout, all coffee and dark chocolate and a hint of char, then ramps up the alcohol and bitterness and adds a layer of citrusy American hop aroma on top.

It is black in the glass under a dense tan head. The roast leans bitter rather than sweet, and Cascade rides over the top with a grapefruit note a traditional stout would never carry. At 6.3% and pushing toward 50 IBU, it is a bold, assertive beer, the roasty answer to a West Coast pale ale.

A Note On Substitutions

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Stout. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
