This is the easy way to brew beer at home. This American Strong Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Strong Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

American Strong Ale is a broad category, a home for big American beers that carry too much malt to pass as an IPA and not quite enough to be a barleywine. The defining traits are strength and assertive American hops, over a malt base with enough caramel and toast to stand up to them. Color ranges from amber to deep copper, and the finish comes out warming rather than sweet.

Chinook, Amarillo, and Simcoe bring pine and citrus, while a bit of Special B adds a dark fruit note underneath.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Strong Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
