The easiest beer recipe kits start with fresh, measured ingredients. This American Wheat or Rye Beer recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's American Wheat, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

American Wheat is the New World take on the wheat beer, and its defining move is what it leaves out. Where a Bavarian hefeweizen leans on yeast for banana and clove, the American version uses a clean fermenting strain and lets the soft wheat malt and the hops speak instead. The result is lighter and more neutral, an easy summer pour.

It comes out pale and often a little hazy, with a smooth wheaty body and a bready-grain flavor. Here the hopping runs higher than usual, with Centennial adding a citrus lift a traditional wheat beer would not have. Refreshing and undemanding, it takes well to a lemon wedge if that is your habit.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's California Ale (White Labs WLP001).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Wheat or Rye Beer. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
