Make pub-style beer at home any weekend you like. This Belgian Dark Strong Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Belgian Dark Strong Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The Belgian dark strong ale is the heavyweight of the abbey lineup, the class that includes Rochefort 10, St. Bernardus Abt 12, and the near-mythical Westvleteren 12. These beers push past ten percent while staying, somehow, drinkable, hiding the alcohol inside layers of dark fruit.

Look for fig, date, raisin, and dark bread, with dark candi syrup driving both the deep color and the plummy sweetness that a dry finish keeps in check. This version folds in a little honey alongside the malt. It is a beer to pour into a snifter and sit with, and it is better after some months in the bottle.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Belgian Dark Strong Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
