Turn your kitchen into a brewery for an afternoon. This British Brown Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's British Brown Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.
British brown ale spans two traditions: the sweeter, lower-gravity brown of the south and the stronger, nuttier northern style associated with Newcastle. Either way it is a malt-forward ale, brown to reddish in the glass, with flavors of toast and biscuit and a gentle, nutty caramel character. Hops sit in the background, present only to balance.
This recipe builds a layered malt bill and finishes it with a small charge of East Kent Goldings, so the grain stays front and center. At four and a half percent it drinks smooth and mellow.

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Fawcett Crystal 45; Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Brown Malt; Flaked Wheat in place of the recipe's Wheat, Torrified (Thomas Fawcett). We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Verdant IPA (Hazy/English IPA) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale III (Wyeast Labs 1318).
