Brewing beer at home is easy when the recipe is done for you. This British Golden Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's British Golden Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

British golden ale came out of the 1980s, when brewers wanted a paler, more refreshing cask beer to win drinkers back from lager. The result is a bright straw-colored ale, lighter in body than a bitter, with a clean malt base that lets the hops and yeast show through. It became a summer regular in British pubs and a common sight at cask festivals.

This version keeps the grain simple, pale malt with a little wheat for head retention, then leans on the hops for a dry finish with a faint citrus and earthy edge. It is an easy drinker at five percent.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Magnum in place of the recipe's Target Pellets. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Verdant IPA (Hazy/English IPA) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale III (Wyeast Labs 1318).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh British Golden Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
