Fresh ingredients delivered and ready to brew at home. This British Strong Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's British Strong Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.
British Strong Ale is less a single recipe than a broad bracket: any malt-forward English ale that outpaces an ordinary bitter without crossing into old ale or barleywine territory. Brewers reached for it when they wanted a winter warmer or a holiday special, something with enough body and strength to reward slow drinking by the fire.
This one pours deep amber and leads with malt: toffee, baked bread, and a touch of orchard fruit off the yeast. Fuggle and East Kent Goldings keep the bitterness earthy and restrained, the way English hops tend to, so the balance stays on the sweeter side without turning cloying.

A Note On Substitutions
This kit includes Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Amber Malt; Dark Munich (Aromatic Malt) in place of the recipe's Aromatic Malt (Simpsons); Flaked Barley in place of the recipe's Barley, Flaked (Thomas Fawcett); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London ESB Ale (Wyeast Labs 1968).
