Make your own beer without the trial and error. This Brown IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Brown IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The Brown IPA sits between an American brown ale and a full IPA, taking the nutty, lightly chocolate malt of the first and loading it with far more hops than the brown ale allows. It never became an official style so much as a favorite among homebrewers who wanted an IPA with more malt to lean on. The color runs deep amber to brown, and the flavor pairs toasted bread and cocoa against citrus and resin.

Columbus and Cascade handle the bittering and aroma here, keeping the hop side bright over the darker grain.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carapils®; Columbus in place of the recipe's Bravo; Cascade in place of the recipe's Falconer's Flight. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Ale (Wyeast Labs 1056).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Brown IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
