Brewing beer at home is easy when the recipe is done for you. This Burton Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Burton Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Burton ale is one of England's older strong ales, the dark, malty, sweet beer that made Burton-on-Trent famous long before the town's pale ales did. It was shipped across Britain and the Baltic through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and was a benchmark for strength and keeping quality.

The style is deep amber to brown, full-bodied, and firmly malty, with dark fruit and a good measure of English hop bitterness to keep the sweetness in line. It is a slow, warming beer, an ancestor of the old ales and winter warmers that came after it. This version lands around six and a half percent.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Burton Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
