Make beer at home and skip the guesswork for good. This California Common recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's California Common, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

California Common, better known by Anchor's trademarked name "steam beer," is one of the few beer styles native to the United States. It dates to Gold Rush California, where brewers fermented lager yeast at warm cellar temperatures because ice was scarce, producing a hybrid that drinks like a lager with a touch of ale-like fruit.

The signature is Northern Brewer hops, woody and faintly minty, set against a toasty amber malt base. It pours clear copper with a bitterness more pronounced than the modest strength suggests. Fermented cool with lager yeast, it comes out crisp and clean, a distinctly Californian everyday beer.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramel 40; Great Chit in place of the recipe's Cara-Pils/Dextrine. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager W-34/70 (German Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's California Lager (Wyeast Labs 2112).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh California Common. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
