Homebrewing for beginners does not get much friendlier than this. This New England IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Cheap Fermenter Hazy IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Martin built this hazy IPA to test a simple question: how much does expensive equipment actually matter? The recipe is a straight New England IPA, oats and wheat for a soft body, a heavy late charge of Azacca, Amarillo, and Citra for orange and tropical fruit, and low bitterness so the hops read juicy.

The point was to brew it in a budget fermenter and see whether the beer suffered. At around 7% it is full and hazy, the kind of glass that looks like orange juice and drinks softer than its strength. A fair argument that process and fresh hops matter more than the price of your gear.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carafoam. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew BRY-97 (West Coast Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's DIPA Ale (Omega OYL-052).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh New England IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
