Brew this classic beer style at home in about five gallons. This American IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew

Brew this classic beer style at home in about five gallons. This American IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Cheap IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

This IPA is the budget half of a cheap-versus-expensive experiment, a lean American IPA built to show you do not need a long hop bill to make a good one. It leans on a single concentrated hop, LUPOMAX Mosaic, for berry and tropical aroma at a fraction of the usual quantity, over a simple pale grist.

The result is a clear, gold-to-amber IPA around 6% with a firm, clean bitterness near 60 IBU and plenty of Mosaic on the nose. Proof that one well-chosen hop, used smartly, can carry a beer that costs less to brew than its reputation suggests.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich I (Weyermann). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Safale American (DCL/Fermentis US-05).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
