Brewing your own beer at home is simpler than you think. This American Pale Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Complex Pale Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Most American pale ales keep the grain bill simple and let the hops lead. This one goes the other way. A deep stack of caramel and biscuit malts builds a bready, layered backbone that pushes the color toward light amber and gives the beer more to chew on than the average pale.

The hops still hold up their end. Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook bring the piney, grapefruit-peel character that defined American brewing in the 1990s, set against caramel sweetness rather than a bone-dry finish. It reads like a pale ale carrying an amber's weight.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Carared (Weyermann); Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Special Roast; Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carapils®. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Ale (Wyeast Labs 1056).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Pale Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
