This is how easy brewing beer at home should be. This American Amber Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Cream Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Cream Ale is an American original from the era when ale breweries needed an answer to the pale lagers taking over the market. What they came up with was a light, crisp, gently sweet ale, often fermented cool or blended with lager, that could match a pilsner for refreshment while using ale brewers' existing equipment.

It pours pale gold and drinks smooth and clean, with a soft corn-driven sweetness and a low, unobtrusive bitterness. There is no cream in it: the name points to the smooth texture, not any ingredient. Light-bodied and easy, it is a porch beer with a bit more character than a mass-market lager.

A Note On Substitutions

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Amber Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
