Brew a batch of fresh beer at home this weekend. This Czech Pale Lager recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Czech Pale Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Czech Pale Lager, or vycepni, is the everyday draft beer of Czech pubs: lower in strength than the famous premium lagers but poured in far greater volume. It is pale gold, soft, and carries a bready malt note under a firm, spicy Saaz hop character. At this gravity it sits near 3.4 percent, which is the point, since it is meant to be drunk by the half-liter across a long afternoon.

The bitterness runs higher than the low strength might suggest, giving the beer a crisp, herbal snap that keeps it lively rather than thin. Soft water and Czech Saaz are the signatures, and both show through here.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Czech Pale Lager. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
