This is the fun, easy way to make beer at home. This Czech Premium Pale Lager recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Czech Premium Pale Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

This is the beer that gave the world pilsner. First brewed in Plzen in 1842, the Czech premium pale lager set the template every golden lager since has chased: deep gold, brilliantly clear, with a dense white head and a full, almost buttery malt body. What sets the Czech original apart from its German descendants is that malt richness carried alongside a heavy hand of Saaz hops.

Bitterness here reaches close to 40 IBUs, but decoction-style malt keeps it balanced rather than sharp, ending on a lingering, floral hop note. It is a bigger, rounder beer than a German pils, and the extra body is the whole point.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carapils®. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager S-189 (Pilsner Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Urquell Lager (Wyeast Labs 2001).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Czech Premium Pale Lager. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
