Small-batch brewing at home has never been this simple. This Dark Mild recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Dark Mild, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Dark mild is a low-strength English ale built for drinking in quantity, once the everyday beer of factory and mine workers across the Midlands and the north. Mild refers to the light hopping rather than any sweetness. The style leans on malt instead, with notes of chocolate and nut over a body that stays surprisingly light for its dark color. Most examples sit well under four percent.

At three and a half percent this is a proper session beer, gentle in bitterness and easy to drink several of. Chocolate malt sets the color and the roast note without weighing it down.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Dark Mild. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
