Everything you need to make beer at home is in the box. This Double IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Double IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The Double IPA, or Imperial IPA, pushes the style to its limits: more malt, far more hops, and an alcohol strength that runs well past a standard IPA. It came out of California in the late 1990s, with brewers competing to see how much hop character a beer could carry before it fell apart. A well-made one hides its strength, staying dry and drinkable while the aroma turns almost overwhelming.

Galaxy and Nectaron lead here with heavy tropical and stone fruit notes, and a dose of corn sugar keeps the finish dry despite the gravity.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Nectaron in place of the recipe's Motueka Pellets; Hallertau Mittelfrüh in place of the recipe's Pacifica Pellets; Hallertau Mittelfrüh in place of the recipe's Wakatu Pellets; Nectaron in place of the recipe's Nelson Sauvin Pellets; Hallertau Mittelfrüh in place of the recipe's Pacifica. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Ale (Wyeast Labs 1056).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Double IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
