Make craft beer at home without the steep learning curve. This Dunkles Bock recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Dunkles Bock, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Bock traces back to Einbeck, a brewing town in Lower Saxony whose strong export ales were later taken up by Bavarian brewers in Munich. The dunkles version is the older, darker branch of the family: a deep copper to brown lager built on Munich malt, with bready and lightly toasted flavors and only enough hops to keep the sweetness in check. Fermentation stays cold and clean, so the malt does the talking.

This one lands near seven percent, strong enough to warm without turning heavy, and pours a dark amber under a tan head. It drinks smooth and slow, the kind of lager that suits colder months and a patient pour. A single charge of Perle hops sits well in the background.

A Note On Substitutions

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Dunkles Bock. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
