Make craft beer at home without the steep learning curve. This English Barleywine recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's English Barleywine, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Barleywine is the strongest of the traditional English ales, named for a strength closer to wine than to everyday beer. It began as the prestige product of country estates and old breweries, a beer meant to be laid down and aged for years before anyone touched it.

This one lands near 9% and pours a clear amber. Look for layered malt: marmalade, toffee, biscuit, and a hint of sherry as it matures. The bitterness runs assertive for an English example, which keeps the sweetness in check and helps the beer hold up over a long cellar life. Brew it now, drink it later.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Amber Malt; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Great Chit in place of the recipe's Cara-Pils/Dextrine; Magnum in place of the recipe's Target. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs 1028).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh English Barleywine. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
