Make beer at home like the pros, one batch at a time. This English IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's English IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The English IPA is the original India pale ale, a strong, well-hopped pale ale that brewers in Burton and London shipped to the colonies in the nineteenth century. It is drier and more restrained than its American descendant, the mineral-rich Burton water lending a crisp bitterness and the English hops giving an earthy, marmalade edge rather than tropical punch.

At six percent with better than fifty IBUs, it has the backbone the export trade demanded, yet it finishes clean enough to drink by the pint. Fuggle and East Kent Goldings handle the aroma over a Magnum bittering charge.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Maris Otter in place of the recipe's Pale Malt, Golden Promise (Thomas Fawcett); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Fawcett Crystal Malt I; Magnum in place of the recipe's Target. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Whitbread Ale (Wyeast Labs 1099).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh English IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
