Brew a batch of fresh beer at home this weekend. This English Porter recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's English Porter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Porter was the defining beer of eighteenth-century London, a dark, hearty ale named for the market and river porters who drank it by the gallon. It predates stout, which began as a stronger version of the same beer, and it carries flavors of chocolate and coffee with a light toast, none of the sharp roast of a dry stout. The color runs deep brown to near black.

This version stays true to the English style: moderate strength, a smooth malt-driven body, and East Kent Goldings for a restrained, earthy bitterness. At just under five percent it is a beer for the whole evening.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Brown Malt; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Fawcett Crystal 45. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs 1028).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh English Porter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
