Brew better beer at home with a recipe that is already dialed in. This Scottish Heavy recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Epic Scottish Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Scottish ales are malt's home turf, brewed in a cool, damp country where hops never grew well and the beer leaned instead on grain. A "heavy," the 70 shilling in old money, is the mid-strength member of the family: caramel and toasty malt up front, a whisper of roast underneath, and hopping kept so low it barely registers.

Fermented cool and clean, this one pours deep reddish brown and, at 3.7 percent, drinks lighter than its malty depth suggests. It is a beer you can work through over an evening without it wearing you down.

A Note On Substitutions

We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Nottingham (English/Neutral) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Scottish Ale (Wyeast Labs 1728).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

    That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Scottish Heavy. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
