Extra Special Bitter is the strongest member of the English bitter family, a style Fuller's made famous and one that gave the whole category its name among American brewers. Expect a deep amber pour and a full malt body, with notes of toast and dried fruit and a bitterness that stands up to the extra gravity without turning harsh. Fuggle and East Kent Goldings run through it from the bittering charge to the late additions.

At close to six percent it drinks bigger than a session bitter but keeps the same balance and cask character. Crystal malt lays down a caramel backbone that the higher strength can carry.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Brown Malt. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Verdant IPA (Hazy/English IPA) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale III (Wyeast Labs 1318).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Strong Bitter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
