Brew your own beer at home without the fuss. This Festbier recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Festbier, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Festbier is the beer poured at the Munich Oktoberfest today. Since around 1990 the tents have served this pale gold, deceptively strong lager in place of the older amber Marzen, aiming for something drinkable enough to enjoy by the liter. It is a touch stronger than a Helles, with a fuller malt body and a clean, bready sweetness.

The Munich malt gives a warm, toasty depth without turning dark, and Hallertau Mittelfruh keeps the hopping soft and traditional. At close to 6 percent it hides its strength well, which is both its charm and its hazard at a long festival table.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Festbier. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
