You can start brewing beer this weekend with one simple kit. This Flanders Red Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Flanders Red, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.
Flanders Red comes from West Flanders in Belgium, where breweries like Rodenbach age it for a year or more in large oak vats. Brewers often call it the most wine-like of beers, and it earns the comparison: deep reddish brown, sharply sour, with cherry and balsamic notes and a hint of leather from the long maturation and the mixed cultures at work in the wood. The oak is central, adding tannin and a slow acetic edge.
A light touch of Tettnang is all the hopping the style needs, since the sourness and the barrel do the heavy lifting. This kit leaves room to add your own oak, which the traditional recipe ages on.
