Make beer at home that rivals your favorite taproom pour. This Foreign Extra Stout recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew

Make beer at home that rivals your favorite taproom pour. This Foreign Extra Stout recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Foreign Extra Stout, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

When Guinness began shipping stout overseas in the early nineteenth century, the beer was built to last: stronger and more heavily hopped than the domestic version, so it could survive months in a ship's hold. That export recipe took root far from Dublin, and today Foreign Extra Stout is brewed and consumed across Nigeria, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia, often outselling the dry stouts back home.

Expect a nearly opaque black pour and a roast character of burnt coffee and bitter chocolate, with a firm hop bite behind it. The gravity carries it past 7%, which brings out dark fruit you won't find in a session stout. It finishes dry, the roast lingering.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Flaked Barley in place of the recipe's Barley, Flaked (Thomas Fawcett); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Crystal 80 in place of the recipe's Crystal 120; Pale Chocolate in place of the recipe's Pale Chocolate Malt (Fawcett); Magnum in place of the recipe's Target. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Thames Valley Ale (Wyeast Labs 1275).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Foreign Extra Stout. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
