This recipe kit is the easy on-ramp to all-grain brewing. This German Helles Exportbier recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's German Helles Exportbier, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Exportbier is the beer of Dortmund, once Germany's brewing powerhouse. Built to survive shipping, it sits a little stronger and firmer than a Helles and a little less bitter than a pils, splitting the difference between Munich's malt and the north's hops. The classic examples take their character from Dortmund's hard, sulfate-rich water, which lends a distinctive minerally snap.

Expect a deep gold pour, a solid bready malt base, and a balanced bitterness that finishes clean and just slightly dry. At around 6 percent it carries more weight than most everyday lagers while staying smooth and composed. Once one of Germany's most-brewed styles, it has grown scarce, which is reason enough to keep it alive at home.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh German Helles Exportbier. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
