Learn to brew beer with a recipe that is hard to get wrong. This American Wheat Beer recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Grisette, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Grisette is the lesser-known sibling of the saison, a Belgian farmhouse ale from the coal and iron country of Hainaut in Wallonia. Where saison went to the field hands, grisette was the miners' beer, lighter and lower in alcohol, brewed with wheat and drunk fresh at the end of a shift. The name traces back to the grey work clothes of the miners themselves.

It pours pale and hazy, dry and softly spicy from the saison yeast, with a lean body that comes from the wheat and oats. Saaz hops add a light noble bitterness. At just over four percent, it is built for a second and third glass.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 6-row American Malt; Wheat Malt in place of the recipe's Wheat Malt, Pale (Weyermann). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle BE-134 (Saison) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Belgian Saison II (Omega OYL-042).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Wheat Beer. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
