Make craft beer at home that tastes like the real thing. This Munich Helles recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew

Make craft beer at home that tastes like the real thing. This Munich Helles recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Helles All-Grain, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

A Munich Helles gives brewers nowhere to hide. It is a pale lager built on malt rather than hops, so its softness and clean finish come down to good grain and a patient cold fermentation. This all-grain version keeps things simple on purpose, letting Pilsner malt set a gentle bread-dough sweetness with only a light touch of Tettnang for balance.

Expect a clear, pale gold beer around 4.6%, dry but not sharp, the everyday lager of Munich beer halls. Hit the fermentation temperature, hold your patience through lagering, and the reward is a beer that tastes of very little except good malt.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Great Chit in place of the recipe's Carapils®. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager S-189 (Pilsner Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Munich Helles Yeast (White Labs WLP860).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Munich Helles. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
