Make beer at home like the pros, one batch at a time. This International Pale Lager recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's International Pale Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

International Pale Lager is the beer more people drink than any other: the pale, gold lager that spread out of central Europe and got adapted for easy drinking in nearly every brewing country. It pours light straw with a soft grainy malt note and a clean, lightly bitter finish. The body is light and the whole thing is built for a second glass rather than for study.

This version keeps things all-malt, with a little Vienna and crystal for a shade more color and depth than a plain pilsner would carry. The bittering comes from Chinook, an American hop, before Saaz and Tettnang settle the finish back toward its European roots.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 20 in place of the recipe's Caramel 10. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager W-34/70 (German Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's German Lager (White Labs WLP830).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh International Pale Lager. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
