Make beer at home and taste the difference that fresh makes. This Irish Red Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Irish Red Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Irish red ale is a modest, easy-drinking style, known abroad mainly through Smithwick's and the red ales that flow on St. Patrick's Day. Its defining feature is color, a reddish amber that comes from a small amount of roasted barley, which also leaves a dry, faintly toasty note in the finish. The malt is otherwise clean and lightly caramel, the hops held back.

At four percent this is a balanced, sessionable ale with broad appeal and nothing sharp about it. Chocolate malt and two crystal malts build the color and a soft sweetness underneath.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Maris Otter in place of the recipe's Thomas Fawcett Pearl Malt; Crystal 80 in place of the recipe's Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal Malt - 45L. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Nottingham (English/Neutral) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Irish Ale (Wyeast Labs 1084).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Irish Red Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
