Brew classic beer styles at home with real confidence. This Kölsch recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Kolsch, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.
Kolsch belongs to Cologne, and by agreement among the city's brewers the name legally applies only to beer made there. It is a hybrid: fermented warm with ale yeast, then conditioned cold like a lager, which gives it a pale straw color and a delicate, soft-bready malt with a faint fruitiness that a true lager would not have. Bitterness is present but polite.
Traditionally it is served in the stange, a slim cylindrical glass, and refilled almost automatically until you set a coaster on top to signal you are done. The beer is subtle to the point of being tricky, since its clean, wine-like crispness leaves little to cover any misstep.
