Brew better beer at home with a recipe that is already dialed in. This Lichtenhainer recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Lichtenhainer, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.
The Lichtenhainer is a nearly extinct beer from Thuringia, named for a village near Jena. Before smoke-free kilns became standard, most beer carried some woodsmoke, and this one made a virtue of it: a smoked wheat beer, lightly soured and low in strength, made for easy summer drinking.
It pours pale and hazy and reads like a tension between two flavors, campfire smoke on one side and a clean lactic tartness on the other. Hopping is barely there. At under four percent it was a working beer, refreshing in a way the smoke makes hard to predict until you taste it.

A Note On Substitutions
This kit includes Smoked Malt in place of the recipe's Oak-Smoked Wheat. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle K-97 (German Ale / Kölsch) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's German Ale (Wyeast Labs 1007). Not included, add your own: Lactobacillus.
