Skip the recipe math and just make great beer at home. This London Brown Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's London Brown Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

London brown ale is the sweet, dark side of English brewing, the style behind Mann's Brown Ale, which sold for decades on a reputation as the sweetest beer in London. It is low in alcohol, often under four percent, and built for comfort rather than complexity.

The beer is deep brown with a reddish edge, and the flavor is soft and malty: caramel, a little chocolate, a lingering sweetness that never fully dries out. Hops stay in the background. It sits closer to a dessert than a session bitter, and it makes no apology for that.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 80 in place of the recipe's English Extra Dark Crystal; Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Brown Malt; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Verdant IPA (Hazy/English IPA) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale III (Wyeast Labs 1318).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh London Brown Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
