Your first batch of homebrew is closer than you think. This American Porter recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Nick Danger Porter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The American porter is the English original rebuilt with a heavier hand: darker, stronger, more roast, and hopped with American varieties instead of English ones. It runs close to black, with chocolate and coffee from the dark malt and a bitterness firm enough to keep the finish from turning sweet. Think of it as a porter with the guardrails removed.

This one lands near 7 percent and pushes the roast and hop bitterness harder than most, a big dark pour that still stops short of full stout territory.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's EPIPHANY FOUNDATION BASE MALT; Munich Malt in place of the recipe's EPIPHANY MUNICH MALT; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Denny's Favorite (Wyeast Labs 1450).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh American Porter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
