Brew classic beer styles at home with real confidence. This Oatmeal Stout recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Oatmeal Stout, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Oatmeal stout is defined by texture. A portion of oats in the mash gives the beer a silky, almost creamy body that sets it apart from the drier Irish stouts, while the flavor stays in familiar dark territory, all chocolate and coffee with a light roast. The style faded for decades before English and American brewers revived it late in the twentieth century.

This one runs a touch stronger at five percent, with a generous share of flaked oats for smoothness and just enough roasted barley to keep it from turning sweet. Fuggle supplies a low, earthy bitterness.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Roasted Barley in place of the recipe's Roasted Barley (Thomas Fawcett). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Whitbread Ale (Wyeast Labs 1099).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Oatmeal Stout. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
