Brewing your own beer just got a whole lot simpler. This Old Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Old Ale, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Old Ale earns its name in the cellar. It was traditionally a stock beer, brewed strong and kept for months or years before serving, sometimes blended back into younger ale. The long rest softened it and added a vinous, faintly tart depth that fresh beer cannot reach.

The style runs dark amber to brown, with malt flavors of dried fig, molasses, and leather. A single Fuggle charge and a dose of dark candi syrup give this version a raisiny undercurrent, and at 7% it carries the warmth the style is known for. Give it a few weeks or months of conditioning and it settles nicely.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Crystal 45; Biscuit Malt in place of the recipe's Special Roast. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle S-04 (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's London Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs 1028).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Old Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
