This is a beer making kit just about anyone can pull off. This Pre-Prohibition Porter recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Pre-Prohibition Porter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

American porter did not vanish during the country's brewing golden age; it changed. Pre-Prohibition versions leaned on six-row malt and a good measure of corn, which set them apart from their English forebears and gave a leaner, drier take on the dark beer.

Expect a near-black pour with chocolate and roast up front, a restrained sweetness, and a clean finish helped along by the corn. It was brewed to be an everyday dark beer rather than a heavy one, and it drinks accordingly. Many were cold-fermented alongside the lagers that shared the brewery floor.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 6-row American Malt; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramel 60; Columbus in place of the recipe's Galena. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager W-34/70 (German Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's California Lager (Wyeast Labs 2112).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Pre-Prohibition Porter. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
