Home brewing made easy starts with a kit like this one. This Red IPA recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Red IPA, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

A Red IPA keeps the hop load of a West Coast IPA but builds a deeper malt base, using caramel and a small amount of roasted grain to pull the color toward amber and ruby. The malt brings caramel and light toffee, which softens the bitterness without hiding it. Think of it as the middle ground between an American amber and an IPA, with the balance tipped toward the hops.

Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial supply the citrus and pine that play against the caramel.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich® II; Carafa II in place of the recipe's Carafa Special I (Weyermann). We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Windsor (English Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Ringwood Ale (Wyeast Labs 1187).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Red IPA. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
