Make taproom-quality beer at home for pennies a pint. This Roggenbier recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Roggenbier, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Roggenbier is a Bavarian rye beer, a relic of the era before rye was reserved by law for bakers and kept out of the brewhouse. It is essentially a dunkelweizen built on rye instead of wheat, and the grain leaves a clear mark: a dry, bready spiciness and a fuller, almost slick body.

The beer pours a hazy reddish brown and pairs that rye character with the banana and clove notes of a weizen yeast. It is medium in strength and only lightly bitter, an old-country style that rewards drinkers who like their bread beers earthy.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Rye Malt in place of the recipe's Rye Malt (Weyermann); Crystal 80 in place of the recipe's Caramel 120; Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich® III. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle WB-06 (Wheat) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Bavarian Wheat (Wyeast Labs 3638).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Roggenbier. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
